Peace SignEvents will be held around the Australia today to mark what activists would like to be declared the International Day of Peace.

Annette Brownlie from Just Peace says they are calling for September 21 to be declared a day of cease-fire to honour a United Nations (UN) resolution.

Ms Brownlie says it is important Australians consider the call given the country’s participation in overseas conflicts.

“We are a nation at war and we have troops doing active service in Iraq and Afghanistan and other places,” she said.

“One of the calls we have made is for our Prime Minister to observe the International Day of Peace and to call all of our troops seeing active service back to barracks for the day.”
