Be Waterwise This Summer

How can we take care of our gardens and use less water? This article I found has information on organic matter and how beneficial it is to the soil. Organic matter is like a sponge. It can be made up of anything you have raked up. Vegetable peelings, anything that has decomposed to the point of becoming crumbly and brown. It is not good  though to add undigested organic matter directly to the soil....

Bill May Permit Growing Industrial Hemp

I found this story on the legalization of growing Hemp. The story was written by Steve Geissinger. Hemp has 0.3 percent of the psychoactive drug, whereas marijuana contains up to 15 percent. Maybe everyone is realizing now how versatile this plant can be. It is understandable that they are being careful with their decision, but there is so much proof now that marijuana can be grown for purposes other...

Eggs?? Easter Eggs???

Well I am not talking about Easter Eggs, but since Easter is not to far away, I thought this article on Eggs would be perfect. Some of us love to paint Easter Eggs all different colors, and set them up on your table for Easter dinner, or just for fun, but as most of us know eggs are high in vitamin D, Iron, Folate, Riboflavin, and B12. Pretty awesome for just a little egg. But I find going to the grocery...

Top Ten Eco-Friendly Reasons to Buy Organic Meat & Dairy

I know there must be lots of questions, about organic Meat and Dairy. I found this article by By the Care2.com staff. I found the article very helpful in answering a lot of my questions. Organic meat is raised hormone free, animals aren’t forced to be cannibals, ethical treatment of animals, and humane as well. The farmers in the fields are being less exposed to the chemicals. The soil is free...

Hemp ice cream anyone?

I am sure some of you are sitting there saying WHAT?? Hemp Ice Cream, you gotta be kidding. Nope I’m not kidding. Hemp seed is very high in fiber but is also an amazing food source. The Hemp seed actually contains no THC at all. The seeds can be used to make hemp milk, hemp tofu and hemp ice cream. This is not something new, humans have been eating hemp for at least 8000 years or longer. Dr Bolton...

How fair is Fairtrade?

So that is the question here. How fair is Fairtrade? We seem to be hearing a lot about that these days. Yes, we are able to get things cheaper, but how fair is it for the workers on the other side of the world? Are they getting paid what they deserve? I myself am not so sure. The aim of fair trade is clear – to get a better deal for Third World farmers. “ How can a few extra pennies a...

High nutrient snacks for kids (and adults)

While most of us in the US are categorically overfed (2/3 of us are overweight) most of us are at the same time undernourished. Vitamin, mineral and other nutrient deficiencies are epidemic (90% of us for instance don’t get enough magnesium). Even though we get plenty of calories, we end up missing out on many vital nutrients. While obviously we all try to eat, and feed those in our care well for...

The Compassionate Backbend

Most of us take a yoga class to find peace and serenity. We all understand how important it is to take time away from our crazy lives, and indulge ourselves in the relaxation of yoga. Just to be able to sit quietly, and listen to our own hearts beating. We gain back our energy, and clear our minds. Our muscles thank us. Why is it then, that when it comes to doing backward bends, we all tend to shy...

Should Air Freighted Foods Lose the Organic label?

We are all starting to hear more and more about Global Warming. This write up I found talks about the transportation of organic foods and how it is effecting our climate, our earth. Sending foods from New Zealand for example. It would take four weeks to get these organic peas, berries, etc, and they would never last that long, and wouldn’t be any good to eat. This is why these foods are being...

Removing Odors & Smells from Clothing

How do you remove smells, odors, fumes and chemical irritants – especially formaldehyde and pesticide smells – from clothing. Some of these fumes are from the manufacturing and finishing processes for new clothing, some occur during shipping of new garments to stores and customers, and some fumes and odors are collected while wearing at parties, restaurants or on the street. The difficulty in removing...

Say No to GMO

What does GMO mean?? Genetically Modified Organism is the most common usage. The acronyms GEO (Genetically Engineered Organism) or simply GM or GE are also used. Genetic engineering is a radical new technology that forces genetic information across the protective species barrier in an unnatural way. Why be concerned? One of many good reasons is that these laboratory-created mutations are unlabeled,...
