There are three plants that are currently slaughtering horses in the United States. BelTex Corporation in Ft. Worth, Texas and Dallas Crown in Kaufman, Texas, export horsemeat to France and Belgium, respectively. The third plant , Cavel International in DeKalb, Illinois, which was shut down in 2002. According to the USDA, there have been over 2 million horses slaughtered since 1989.
